“Mariachi Club”

Drama (Full Feature) Based on a true story

Screenplay by Alma Award-Winner Rick Najera

Synopsis
Mariachi Club is a powerful, inspiring, original, true story based on the life of an Anglo, first year rookie teacher, Keith Ballard and the Mariachi music program he created to engage the ‘bussed in Latino kids’ in a predominately rich Anglo high school.  Against all odds and under a strict school administration, without speaking a word of Spanish or ever teaching Mariachi music, Keith Ballard was able to miraculously engage the segregated Latino kids at his high school and motivate them to new academic levels through ‘their music’. His program has since flourished throughout the city, state and nationwide, spawning more than 200 Mariachi clubs just in the San Diego School district alone.
